Folkloric Percussion & Songs

Experience the conga and folkloric music of Cuba, complemented by a variety of instruments through the education of a real, local Musician and Producer.


Whats special about this season’s special class?

  • Practice and concept (including things like understanding clave, the role of the leader drum, etc)

  • Learn the patterns that give the Folkloric music genre its distinct rhythm and participate in the Segundo passage of a classic rumba.

  • Engage in songs and song cycles and learn how different rhythms combine into something unforgettable

  • Practice improvisational concepts for different roles such as the Quinto and specialty rhythmbs.

  • Begin a journey learning notated music in an approachable way.

  • Practice your ear in rhythm training, allowing you to capture the beat of any song.

Student’s will also explore South Indian Rhythms, odd time signatures, Multi-metric music, & more!


Meet your instructor…

Robert Woods-LaDue

Robert Woods-LaDue is a musician living in Bakersfield, California, specializing in composition, percussion, keyboards, guitars, and music production. He is an expert in afro-cuban folkloric percussion, playing in styles such as rumba, güiro, benbe, palo etc. He releases his own music under the pseudonym ddb (dennydennybreakfast) in a variety of styles and contexts. Robert is the bandleader of the metal band Onkos which releases through the record label I, Voidhanger records.  Robert Woods-LaDue studied percussion with Ney Rosauro at the University of Miami and with David Johnson at CalArts.  Robert has also studied Afrocuban Percussion with master percussionist Sandy Perez as well as Jesus Diaz for over 10 years.
